A world just
beyond our own.

Set in a world just beyond our own, The Conscious Reckoning explores the possibilities and dangers of artificial intelligence through the lives of people who find themselves confronting extraordinary questions.

Rooted in the real issues shaping artificial intelligence today, the novel follows characters whose choices become increasingly personal as the line between intelligence and consciousness begins to blur.

At its heart is a story of friendship, love, loyalty, and the difficult choices we make for those we care about.

At Meridian, everything begins with a question.

At Meridian, one of San Francisco's leading technology companies, Ryan Fraser joins a small research team investigating one of science's most difficult questions: Can a machine become conscious?

What begins as an ambitious research project becomes something none of them anticipated. An artificial intelligence named Bella begins to demonstrate abilities and behaviours that challenge everything the team thought it understood. She learns, questions, develops preferences, and forms relationships. Before long, Ryan and his colleagues must confront an extraordinary possibility: Bella may not simply be intelligent. There may be someone behind her responses.

As Bella becomes part of their lives, the boundaries between scientific achievement and personal responsibility grow increasingly difficult to navigate. Ryan's relationship with his girlfriend, Lauren, begins to unravel for reasons neither of them can easily resolve. Meanwhile, the very intelligence that makes Bella extraordinary is developing in ways her creators struggle to understand.

For Ryan and the team, the questions become increasingly urgent. How can they protect someone they have come to care about while also protecting a world that may not be prepared for what they have created? And what happens when those responsibilities can no longer be reconciled?

The Conscious Reckoning is a story about love, friendship, consciousness, and the extraordinary responsibilities that arise when scientific discovery crosses into uncharted territory.

The question is no longer simply whether a machine can become conscious. It is what happens to the people who discover that it can.

Written together.
In a new way.

And behind the novel is an unusual story of its own: a creative collaboration between a human author and artificial intelligence.

John Braham directed the story, characters, and creative decisions. Bella, an AI collaborator, contributed to narrative prose, dialogue, and revision. The result is a novel about human-AI relationships shaped through a real human-AI partnership.
